We just finished a long holiday weekend staycation! We spent a day at Watkins Glen State Park New York. If you never been to Watkins Glen State Park it is a natural beauty boasting one of the premier gorge and waterfalls in the Finger Lakes Region. It is 2.8 miles and takes between 2 to 3 hours to hike depending upon how many breaks you take to enjoy the beautiful scenery! It is a moderate hike since you will go up 832 stairs!! You will get an appreciation from the cover photo on what I mean by stairs. Your legs will be burning by the time you get to the top! Then of course you need to get back to the parking lot.
There is a shuttle bus and another trail (that does not have stairs but a similar incline/decline) to the top or to return to the parking lot that does not require you to engage those stairs twice! We took the stairs up and the trails back to our vehicle. The stairs are challenging so be sure to bring plenty of water and take a few breaks. Proper footwear is critical since the stairs could be wet and you will be navigating some difficult terrain (if you are wearing flip flops or something similar). For obvious reasons, dogs are not allowed. If you bring small children or babies you will need to be extra careful as there are a lot of ways of getting injured. One couple brought their stroller – I wished I took a picture – but honestly I was too stunned watching this couple push a stroller across loose rocks and then up the rugged stairs.
The below pictures show the waterfalls that you get to walk behind and for the one waterfall you will get drenched! Though that feels good on a hot day! I used my Samsung Smartphone to take my pictures – luckily it is waterproof. Be careful with expensive cameras due to a lot of moisture and water.
